Diseases of Crops

                             FRENCH BEAN

Name of the dieseaseSymptomsControl Measures
ANTHRACNOSEAll plant parts above the ground level are attacked but the most prominent symptoms appear on pods as black, sunken cankers. The spots are usually depressed with dark centres bright red, yellow or orange margins. Cotyledons and stem show similar symptoms. Similar spots develop on the seed.

1. Seed treatment with organomercurials. Thiram (0.3%) or Captan (0.3%).

2. Spray Bordeaux mixture 4:4:50 or Difolatan (0.3%) at 15 days interval.

RUSTCharacteristic rust pustules are formed mainly on the underside of leaves, though often they may be found on leaf petiole and stem. In severe infections, the leaf withers.

1. Spray Benlate ( 0.1%) or Dithane M-45 (0.2%) or Plantvax (0.2%) + Vitavax (0.2%) at 15 days inferval.

2.Use resistant varieties

ASHY STEM BLIGHT The first symptom of the disease is yellowing of the leaves. Within a day or two such leaves droop and in the course of next 2-3 days they may drop off. In case of seed infection, symptoms start at the point of attachment of cotyledons on stem as blackening of the stem tissue, which later dry up and produce numerous pycnidia. Wilted plants show typical ashy stem blight symptoms. In advanced cases Sclerotial bodies may be seen scattered on the affected tissues. Infected seeds turn blank or brown. Some seeds may be symptomless carriers.

Seed treatment with Benlate (0.2%) or Bavistin (0.2%) or Vitavax (0.2%) or Brassiccol (0.2%).

2. Drench the infected plants/soil with Blitox/Fytolan/Blue Copper (0.4%).

ROOT ROTThe first symptom is noticed on collar region of young seedling in the form of small, pin head size, lesions which are brown or reddish in colour. These lesions enlarge, cover larger area and girdle the stem. At this stage, plants start showing yellowing of leaves and within a week plant wilts. In few cases when main root system is severely damaged, small roots emerge from healthy collar region which keeps the plant erect, but such plants yiels poorly. Pods touching the ground develop zonate, circular, brown spots. Infected seeds, develop orange discolouration or brown spots and turn buff coloured with leathery surface.

1. Seed treatment with Benlate (0.2%) or Bavistin (0.2%) or Brassiccol (0.2%).

2.Pre-sowing application of herbicides like Tok E-25 and Lasso.

3.Granular insecticides like Thimet, Solvirex or Carbofuron (1.5 kg a.i./ha) applied alongwith fertiliser also reduce the disease.

4.Avoid use of excessive nitrogenous fertilisers.

ANGULAR LEAF SPOTSmall angular, dark brown leaf spots giving the leaf a chuck board appearance. Favourable conditions leads to complete defoliation.

1. Seed treatment with Benlate (0.1%)

2. Spray Benlate (0.1%) or Dithane Z-78 or Dithane M-45 (0.2%).

BEAN COMMON MOSAICTrifoliate leaves affected with mosaic have irregular shaped, light-yellow and green areas of various types. Besides the characteristic mottling, there may be considerable puckering and malformation of leaves. The infected plants remain stunted. Downward curling of the leaves is another common symptoms of this disease.

1. Eradication of infected plants and weeds from the field.

2. Use of healthy seeds.

3. Application of Furadon or Disyston or Thimet 10-G granules @ 1.5 kg a.i/ha at the time of sowing of seed would control the disease to certain extent.

4. Krishi oil (2%) sprayis has also been found effective in minimising disease spread.

BEAN(DOUBLE)YELLOW MOSAICScattered, slightly discoloured patches, which gradually turn bright yellow, develop on the leaves of infected plants. At time, the whole leaf looks bright yellow or golden colour. Same as described for the control of French bean common mosaic virus.
